GREETINGS!
If, in my Mid to Late 70s days in Saker Baptist College, you mentioned the single word "PA'A" in reference to a TUTOR, there would be quite some uncertainty as to WHO exactly you were referring to, because it could be:
PA'A NDAME (as in "Monsieur"),
PA'A HADDIE (as in Mr. George Haddison),
PA'A TAMBE (as in, Mr. J.U. Tambe),
PA'A IKOME (as in Chief Ikome), or even
PA'A TAYUI himself, (as in "BABA")!!!
Conversely, there was absolutely NO confusion, when the word "MA'A" was used!!!
THE ONE AND ONLY PERSON REFERRED TO AS "MA'A" (with no Surname or First Name attached was Mrs. CATHERINE MUSOKO, OUTSPOKEN, UNFILTERED, SKILLED and UNFILTERED WIELDER OF THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE.
The one who lived in the right side of the DUPLEX that stood by "THE TAP", next to the WORKSHOP, at the CREST of the hill that led from NEW TOWN through S.B.C.'s gate into the campus.
Hers was the type of class in which you rarely heard "obscure/abstract" terms like "Predicate", "Preterit", "Adjunct", "Syntax" and Past Participle". (That was PA'A NTONI (as in, Mr. Lucas Ntonifor)'s type of class.
In her class, YOU WERE SIMPLY TAUGHT, PRACTICALLY, HANDS-ON and CONCRETELY, HOW TO SPEAK GOOD, CLEAN ENGLISH. PERIOD!!!!! BELIEVE THAT!
In between her ...
Teaching us a song or two, (Every single time I hear "ETERNAL FATHER STRONG TO SAVE" played or sung, I get misty-eyed with NOSTALGIA, albeit a good 4 decades after I first heard her sing it to my FORM 1 Class (and WOE BETIDE anyone who she believed she had heard adding a "MAGIC PART" to the song!! Hahahahahaha!!!);
Commenting, as she herself wept, on the demise of such people as Late Mr. TATAW OBENSON aka AKO-AYA (whose twin daughters were are our classmates) and a certain Monsieur SIMON MPONDO who was murdered in Douala; and
Chiding us for our lack of etiquette or manners (you did not dare sneeze, fail to say "Excuse Me" and get away with it!), etc.
In between all of this "extracurricular" stuff, she did teach and model how to SPEAK & WRITE English correctly, - her famous QUESTION TAGS included, as in:
"Dr. MBONGO has a wig! DOES HE?
"Mr. MBILE fell down! "DID HE REALLY??
Weh! They really do not make'em like her anymore!
Well, AAAAALL of that said, OUR BELOVED MA'A turned 95 a couple of months ago, and her children, in keeping with the GOD-GIVEN COMMAND that we honor our parents, held a DINNER PARTY for her at the BONAPRISO Residence of the 3rd of her Daughters to attend Saker Baptist College - CLASS OF 1978's Mrs. SUSAN ELINGE MUSOKO EKOLLO, the first 2 SAKERETTE daughters being - CLASS OF 1967's Ms JANET MBOTI NGONGI and CLASS OF 1976's LATE Dr. OLIVE MBANGU MUSOKO. (R.I.P.)
Wondering who the SPECIAL INVITEE at the Dinner was?
'Twas none other than MA'A's "little" brother, 93 YEAR OLD MOLA NJOH LITUMBE, himself FATHER of 3 SAKERETTES as well:
CLASS OF 1970's Mrs. LIENGU LITUMBE MARTIN, CLASS OF 1979's Mrs. ENANY LITUMBE NJIE and CLASS OF 1982's Ms EMBELLE LITUMBE.
Care for a little history? Sooooo THRILLED you said "YES" because I am positive that you'd be interested in knowing that this UNIQUE PAIR are, in fact, the LAST SURVIVING TWO who, by dint of their parents being the first and second BAKWERI PASTORS OF THE BASEL MISSION (which later morphed into the current PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH IN CAMEROON - PCC), had the privilege of being BORN and RAISED in the HISTORIC MITTELSCHULE (GERMAN MIDDLE SCHOOL) which trained the very first Presbyterian Pastors and German Scholars!!
Incidentally, the area where this MITTELSCHULE edifice once stood, is currently home to the CHURCH ON THE HILL IN BUEA STATION and the compound wherein the MODERATOR OF THE PCC resides!
We enthusiastically SALUTE the MATRIARCH - and PATRIARCH, by the way, and pray the ALMIGHTY to continue to sustain them both.
As for our cherished MA'A MUSOKO, who, it must be mentioned also TAUGHT at the BAPTIST TEACHER TRAINING COLLEGE (BTTC) and the BAPTIST BOYS SECONDARY SCHOOL (BBSS) BUEA prior to and after her sojourn at S.B.C respectively, we offer prayers for her WELL-BEING and HEALTH, trusting that HE who has sustained her for close to a full CENTURY now and saw her through the trauma of losing an adult daughter, will continue to BLESS & KEEP her!
