Even if you have been living under Abuja's ASO Rock for the past few months and weeks, there still isn't any way you could have missed the uproar that erupted following the very unfortunate deaths of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri and Eric Garner in Staten Island, New York.
Well, Mrs. Dolly Lyonga Lambe found her own unique way to give vent to her frustrations, and she did so significantly enough for SILICON AFRICA to take notice and PUBLISH what she wrote!! Please find below the POEM she wrote:
CRY FERGUSON
And there was the verdict
NO CHARGES against him
Free to go, Free to live
The crowd roars in discontent
While he lay dead in the grave
Another black life, worthless
As his lifeless body laid in the street
Like a road kill from a passing car
The crowd rages in anger
But yet, they found him NOT GUILTY
A young black life ended
Goals and aspirations ended
And as his world watched
With tears flowing down their faces
The crowd remembers that day in rage
Many others gone before
Way too soon in similar fashion
The anger is overwhelming
For nothing wrong was found of him
But a life taken, lays in the grave, silent
Another opportunity cut short
For the worthlessness of his life
Was echoed by the verdict of eleven
Yet, they say “jury of his peers”
But there were only three
Buildings burned, smoke filled the air
Rocks thrown, cars set ablaze
Windows crashed, water spewed
Tensions run high, calm was called
For a worthless life, silent in the grave
Jury of eleven, but only three
With a passing vote of nine
Who could not feel the pain
For they have not… the history
And yet they called it “jury of his peers”
For his life was worthless
And was vehemently made clear
On this cold winter evening
Why, oh why; Was it because of his race?
Or his social status in our “free” society?
