BIOGRAPHY OF PA GEORGE EDELSTINE MOKOKO MONJIMBO
Pa George E.M. MONJIMBO was born on 15th July 1922 in Buea to Late Adolf Esome Harry Monjimbo and to Late Francess Jofi Monjimbo née Ekema.
He was baptized into the fellowship of the Ebenezer Baptist Church, Down Beach Victoria, on the 8th of February 1942 by Late Reverend Oscar Embola.
He attended the Victoria Government School from 1931 to 1937. In 1938, after passing the Common Entrance Examination, he gained admission into the Baptist Mission Higher Elementary School, Great Soppo, Buea, where he obtained his First School Leaving Certificate.
On the 3rd of July 1940, he was employed by the West Africa Plantation Company Ltd., now C.D.C, in Bota-Victoria, as an apprentice fitter/machinist.
On the 12th of December 1947, he was transferred to Moliwe as one of the pioneer fitters to establish the C.D.C. Motor Transport Department there.
In 1948 and 1951, he passed his classes III and II Government Trade Tests respectively.
He was later transferred back to Bota and on 12th August 1953, he was appointed foreman of the Railway and Mechanical Workshop, Bota.
On the 4th of May 1955, the C.D.C. sponsored Papa to Nigeria for further studies in U.A.C. Motor Training School, Lagos, a course which earned him a diploma in Diezel Engine Technology. Upon his return on 1st January 1958, he was upgraded to a Technical Foreman.
On the 25th of August 1956, Papa got engaged to Miss Francisca Ebenye Njie and on the 19th of December 1959, they were solemnly united in matrimony at the Ebenezer Baptist Church, Down Beach Victoria by the Late Reverend S.B. Nformi. A fruitful union blessed with 8 children.
On the 1st of January 1960, he was promoted to the rank of junior Mechanical Supervisor (Intermediate Service Grade). On the 27th of August 1962, he was sent to the United Kingdom by the C.D.C. again, for an intensive practical course of study with the firm of Messrs. Ruston and Hornsby Ltd. Lincoln, where he studied general workshop and mechanical workshop practice.
After the course, with excellent grades, he returned home and was posted to Tiko on 15th November 1962
On the 1st of April 1963, he was promoted to the Senior Service Grade as a Mechanical Supervisor and was in charge of the C.D.C. giant Ikange Mechanical Workshop in Tiko.
On the 1st of July 1967, he was upgraded to Senior Mechanical Supervisor, a post he held until 1st April 1973 when his appointment was terminated during the redundancy period.
On the 18th of June 1973, he decided to settle with his family in Bonadikombo – Limbe and established himself as a farmer in the domain of piggery and poultry farming.
As a member of the village community, he served the Bonadikombo Community in the following capacities:
1)Member of Catholic School Parent/Teacher Association (P.T.A.)
2)Member of the Bonadikombo Traditional Council.
3)Vice Chairman of the Bonadikombo Health Committee.
4)Vice Chairman of Bonadikombo Water Maintenance Committee
5)President of cell 1 during the C.N.U. era.
On the 12th of July 1985, he was appointed and sworn in as one of the Limbe Customary Court Judges, an appointment he held until 30th November 2013.
Thereafter, he lived quietly in his home in Bonadikombo, continuing to be the pillar, rock and invaluable resource to his family, church, friends and community at large that he had been for decades.
Mr. G.E.M. Monjimbo passed away peacefully on May 8th 2017, just 2 months short of what would have been his 95th birthday, leaving behind his wife of 57 years, all 8 of his children and 18 grandchildren to mourn his passing. He will be sorely missed. May his soul rest in peace.
